Her first volume, The Heart of a Woman, includes an introduction by William Stanley Braithwaite, who Johnson credited with inspiring her to write in the first place. Braithwaite states in the introduction that Johnson’s poems are “intensely feminine and for me this means more than anything else that they are deeply human.”
